.:: What is Karate?

Karate is a self defence system without the use of weapons. In fact, karate means 'Empty Hands' (Kara = Empty, Te = Hands).

At Shinja-Kai Karate our training is divided into 5 categories:

.:: Basics

Blocks, punches, kicks and stances.

.:: Kata or Forms

Uses all of the above techniques whilst moving in pre-arranged forms.

.:: Sparring

Touch contact only at low levels progressing to body contact at mid to high levels.

.:: Rolls, Breakfalls and Leg Sweeps

And general mat work.

.:: Self Defence

Including blocking, punching, kicking, leg sweeps, wrist locks and arm locks.

.:: Note

Some of the original karate styles had grappling, locking and throwing techniques which were omitted in their teachings, particularly when karate became very popular after being introduced to mainland Japan and spread throughout the world.

Most karate styles have reduced their art to blocking, punching and kicking only. At Shinja-Kai, we teach wrist locks, arm locks, leg sweeps and how to roll and breakfall along with blocks, punches and kicks to make it a complete and well rounded self defence system.
